Compact Drive

(CX.0001002 / CX.0001073)

Supported cameras and recording formats

The CODEX Compact Drive can be used as recording media for the ARRI ALEXA Mini LF and ALEXA 35 camera systems.

It is recommended to always be running the most up to date Software Update Package (SUP) for your camera to ensure compatibility with all available Compact Drive media types.

The 1TB Compact Drive (CX.0001002) supports all recording formats and frame-rates on the ALEXA Mini LF.  Maximum frame-rate for some recording formats is limited on the ALEXA 35.

The 2TB Compact Drive (CX.0001073) supports all recording formats and frame-rates on the ALEXA Mini LF and ALEXA 35.

IMPORTANT:

  • 1TB Compact Drives  (Rev A or Rev B) which have had firmware updates to allow them to work on the ALEXA 35, require ALEXA Mini LF SUP 7.1.1 or above to be supported.
  • 1TB Compact Drives (Rev A or Rev B) which have been sent to CODEX for service will have been updated to the latest firmware, and will require ALEXA Mini LF SUP 7.1.1 or above to be supported.
  • Please check the SUP Compatibility Tables below to ensure your camera is running a compatible SUP for your Compact Drives.

Capacity

The user capacity of the CX.0001002 model is 960 GB.

The user capacity of the CX.0001073 model is 1920 GB.

Offload speed

Assuming that the Compact Drive Reader is connected via USB-C (to achieve ~1GB/s speeds), and that the backup storage is fast enough to write at ~1GB/s, the download time for 960GB of data would be 16 minutes. If a copy application is used to perform a verification pass (recommended) then this will add some overhead to the process - depending on the type of checksum and verification method used it may double the overall download time.

Here are some approximate download times for a full 960GB Compact Drive containing 32 minutes of ALEXA Mini LF 4.5K OpenGate MXF/ARRIRAW recording (at 24fps), along with the data rate that the backup storage would need to achieve them*:

Notes

  • These tests were performed using an iMac Pro 10-core system with 3GHz Xeon processor.
  • If you have enabled HDE in Device Manager, your offload speeds may be limited by your computer’s available CPU processing.
  • Offload speed with different copy tools may vary.
  • Checksum verification (recommended) will require additional time and reduce the overall offload speed.

Erasing / Formatting

The Erase option in Device Manager is a good way to prepare your Media to return to camera once all data has been safely offloaded. You will then be prompted automatically to format the Compact Drive once it is loaded back on camera.

The Format option in Device Manager is not required for CODEX recording Media.

Warning: There is no ‘undo’ option after Media has been formatted or erased, so only use these options once all critical data has been securely backed up to another storage location.

When a Compact Drive is reformatted in the ALEXA Mini LF a secure erase operation is performed. This means that data is entirely deleted and recovery is not possible.

If a Compact Drive is reformatted or erased on a computer, then in some cases it may be possible to recover. Please contact CODEX Support.
