Data Recovery

Introduction

Data recovery from CODEX media is possible under certain circumstances. In this guide, we will discuss some of the most common data recovery scenarios and whether data recovery is likely to be possible.

If you are in need of data recovery, please read this guide for general information, and then contact CODEX Support to discuss your case in more detail.

Please read the Support FAQ's section which includes details of issues specific to certain CODEX media and cameras.

Can my data be recovered?

If you have accidentally erased or formatted your CODEX media, data recovery may be possible in some situations. See below for more information.

Erase using CODEX Device Manager
CODEX media erased in Device Manager can usually be recovered by a CODEX Support engineer, provided that no further data has been written to the media.
Format using macOS Disk Utility

If CODEX media is formatted with macOS Disk Utility (for example to APFS or ExFAT file system) data recovery may not be possible.

  • CODEX CompactDrives formatted when mounted with the CompactDrive Dock Thunderbolt-3 (CX.0001007) will be secure erased during the format process, and recovery will not be possible.
  • It may be possible to recover CODEX CompactDrives formatted when mounted with the CompactDrive Reader USB-C (CX.0001005).
  • Other CODEX media may be recoverable.

Please contact CODEX Support to arrange a remote assessment.

Format on Camera
ALEXA 35 | ALEXA 265 |
ALEXA Mini LF
When a CODEX Compact Drive is formatted on ALEXA 35 or ALEXA Mini LF, it is securely erased to prepare it for recording. This means that all data is permanently erased and data recovery will not be possible.
ALEXA LF | ALEXA 65 | ALEXA SXT | ALEXA XTFormatting in ProRes Mode

When a CODEX Capture Drive is formatted on ALEXA LF, 65, SXT or XT in ProRes mode, then it is securely erased to prepare it for recording. This means that all data is permanently erased and data recovery will not be possible.

Formatting in ARRIRAW Mode

If a CODEX Capture Drive is formatted on ALEXA LF, 65, SXT or XT in ARRIRAW mode, then data recovery may be possible. The Capture Drive will need to be sent to a CODEX service centre to attempt recovery.

If the Capture Drive has been recorded to since formatting, then some previous clips may be unrecoverable.
Fails to Mount on Mac or Camera
There are a number of reasons why a storage device (such as CODEX media) may fail to load on a computer or camera, for example; compatibility, configuration, software or hardware issues. Please contact CODEX Support to discuss your individual circumstances with us.

If your CODEX media is failing to load on camera, then please save your camera log files and contact CODEX Support.

If your CODEX media is failing to load on a Mac, then please save your CODEX log files and contact CODEX Support.
Errors During Offload
An error during offload could occur due to a number of factors, and data recovery will usually be possible. Please contact CODEX Support to discuss your specific circumstances.
